Abstract

In 1949, the medical student, who did not find access to become a surgeon, became the first woman to be a
full-time professor at Columbia's College of Physicians and Surgeons, and three years later, in 1952,
she presented before the meeting joint effort of the International Society for Research in Anesthesia and
the College of Anesthesiologists - published the following year[1] - one of the most successful clinical
contributions, the way of evaluating the state of health of the newborn based on 5 signs, which would lead its
name: the Apgar score.
