Abstract

Heterotopic pregnancy is defined as the simultaneous presence of an intrauterine and extrauterine pregnancy. The incidence is low among spontaneous pregnancies, but it has increased due to assisted reproductive techniques. The extrauterine embryo is non-viable and the intrauterine pregnancy may have different complications. Since it is a rare clinical condition, associated with a high maternal morbidity and mortality, an adequate diagnosis and management are essential. The b fraction of the human chorionic gonadotropine hormone and vaginal ultrasound are the best options for a diagnosis. Laparoscopic surgical approach has been proposed as the best choice since it offers advantages over an open technique approach.
